Many teams are attempting to use BDD. This talk will look at where many teams start their journey, creating gherkins (given-when-then statements) and step definitions.
Should we go back and discover where the seeds grow?
We will look at what has been described by Gaspar Nagy and Seb Rose as the Discovery phase of BDD.
Creating Examples and the rules behind stories before ever putting them into gherkin format.
We will then move forward to the what most teams are using as their first taste of BDD creating gherkins.
We will discuss tools that can be utilized for a clearer understanding of what is going to be built,
from all points of view PO, Dev team and the QA team.
With a clearing understanding across the team we can build better quality into our product with a higher customer satisfaction and lower technical debt.

Michael Collier is a Software Developer at Commerce Bank of Kansas City with close to 20 years of experience spanning many different industries delivering value to his customers. He has been involved with Commerce Bank’s Agile transformation since 2013 as an Agile Developer Coach.
He has been a volunteer with the Scrum Alliance on their Gathering review teams as a reviewer and ScrumMaster since 2013. Working with many talented volunteers reviewing presentation abstracts to provide quality Global Scrum Gatherings for the Scrum Alliance. Michael was conference presenter on Agile development practices at SGFLA and Lean Agile KC 2016. Most recently he was a member of the NAGT for our Minneapolis gathering.
Michael’s passion is helping teams deliver customer value. He is conducts internal trainings focusing on Agile Development practices XP and Lean combined with TDD – BDD –ATDD.
Michael currently holds the Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®), Certified Scrum Professional ScrumMaster™ (CSP-SM™), Certified Scrum Product Owner® (CSPO®), Certified Scrum Professional Product Owner™ (CSP-PO™) and Certified Scrum Developer® (CSD®) certifications.
In his off time, he enjoys entertaining as a member of an internationally known pirate themed musical group.
