How Strong is your Foundation? Revisiting the Core of Agile

Slides 12 Principles Cheat Sheet The Agile Manifesto and 12 Principles are our foundation. We value these items like no other. What are we doing to strengthen these ideas in our daily work? How are we embracing these things on a daily basis? Let’s revisit our foundation and talk about what’s needed to ensure a strong foundation. If you’re an American citizen, you can sing the National Anthem and say the Pledge of Allegiance. If you’re a Christian, you can recite the Lord’s Prayer by heart. If you are in Law Enforcement (or have ever been arrested), you know the Miranda Rights. And if you are a Cubs fan, you love to sing “Go Cubs, Go” after they win. As a member of our agile community, can you do the same with our foundational items; the Manifesto and the Principles? For almost 17 years, these two things have guided the crux of the Agile Movement. But do we hold these items sacred? Are they ‘a part of us’? Can we recite them like we do the Pledge of Allegiance? This session will revisit the Agile Manifesto, the 12 Agile Principles as well as the evolution into Modern Agile. While it may seem to be a given that we do hold these things to be sacred, we’ll talk about what that means. By the end of the session, the audience will be able to recite all of these items using several memory techniques and also engage in a conversation about why these fundamental topics are so important to agile success.

Steve Toalson

Agile Evangelist and Scrum Coach - Cerner

Steve Toalson – Agilist and friend. Supporting agile teams in their pursuit of excellence. Steve ran away from his PMP Credentials some time ago after finding the warm and welcoming joy of Agile. Always a ‘people-person’, and never quite the Professional Project Manager, Steve discovered that Agile was a perfect fit for him. Steve went on to work with several Agile Teams and conducted Agile Training at Hallmark, spreading the ‘good word’ of Agile to anyone willing to listen (and even those that wouldn’t). His passion and energy took him to other teams (Westar Energy, FHLBTopeka and now at Cerner) where he continues to share his knowledge and experience of Agile. Steve embraces the learning culture that Agile advocates in his constant pursuit of personal and professional betterment.
